Slow Club & Thumpers @ Camden Barfly 18.04.13

Playing a one off gig for Becks at the Barfly in Camden is Sheffield’s Slow Club. After arriving too late to catch the first support band it is left up to Thumpers to get the evening off to a start.

Palma Violets, Childhood, Baby Strange @ The Electric 09.04.13

Glasgow trio Baby Strange are the first band on, they have a punk sound with some punchy hooks, songs such as ‘Want It/Need It’ and current single ‘Pure Evil’ have the ability to get the crowd jumping up and down and ‘Mess’ is slightly more melodic with catchy chords. The band seems to have a lot of confidence already and although they are not doing anything particularly original I wouldn’t bet against Baby Strange appearing on plenty more line ups.

Drenge, single launch @ Sebright Arms 05.03.2013

I recently wrote about this band after seeing them for the first time at the XFM Xposure All Dayer in January. They were a definite highlight of the day so I headed down to watch them again at their single launch show which took place at the Sebright Arms on Tuesday.

Xfm Exposure All Dayer @ Camden Barfly 26.01.2013

John Kennedy’s XFM Xposure All Dayer has introduced many to some big names over the years, notably The Horrors, Friendly Fires, Mystery Jets and Jamie T to name but a few.

Due to the non-existent Northern Line over the weekend I arrive at the Barfly after the first few bands have performed, but still manage to catch an eclectic mix of up and coming artists.

Spector, Swim Deep, Splashh, LULS @ Shepherds Bush Empire, 10th November 2012

“From The Shacklewell Arms to Shepherds Bush Empire in a year” frontman Fred Macpherson reflects halfway through Spector’s sold out show, After years of grafting and gigging with his previous bands, firstly with Les Incompetents, then with Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man, Macpherson has surely now proved his worth in the indie hall of fame.

Tweak Bird – Undercover Crops

American duo Tweak Bird has come back (in due time) with album no. 3 and is promoting it by touring with legends the Melvins in the US. Sadly, what sounds like one of the best nights ever isn’t coming to the UK, we’ll have to wait until they come here separately.

This Week's Must Hear

Last Heir

Last Heir

Based in London and Brighton, recently formed Last Heir are currently writing and recording their debut EP.

Comparisons can be made to 90’s grunge bands but Last Heir also have a unique sound of their own, catchy riffs and strong vocals from frontman Josh Rowley set this 3 piece apart from a lot of other new bands.

You can listen to their single ‘Way Teen’ on Soundcloud and the band have already made an excellent video to accompany the song. Currently planning more live dates for later in the Spring and Summer, Last Heir have a lot of potential and Electric Grapevine will definitely be keeping a close eye on them in 2013!

How Many Albums Does it Take to Reach No.1?

A friend (the editor of Electric Grapevine) said to me recently:

"I was displeased to discover that Rihanna’s album 'Talk That Talk' is
number one this week. BUT guess how many albums she had to sell to claim
the top spot. One million? 100,000?? Surely at least 10,000??? No. Just a
